Ash Wednesday is the first day of the season of Lent (the 40 days leading up to Easter).
In ancient times it was believed that throwing ash over your head indicated to God that you were repenting (changing your ways and asking for forgiveness). Ash Wednesday occurs on the first day after Carnaval/Mardi Gras.
