Freedom Day celebrates the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution, ratified on this day in 1865.
The 13th Amendment made slavery illegal in the United States, except when used as punishment for a crime. It was signed February 1, 1865 and was the first of the three Reconstruction Amendments adopted following the American Civil War.
The 13th Amendment is as follows:
Section 1: Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Section 2: Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
