Buddhist cultures are steeped in a respect for ancestors and the Bon Festival, Obon Festival or Feast of Lanterns, is one of the more visually appealing renditions of honoring the dead. This three day celebration, centered on the fifteenth of August or July (different regions celebrate at different times). Celebrations include bonfires on hills and lanterns lit throughout the towns. Buddhists believe the spirits of the dead come back to earth during this time. The lanterns and bonfires are meant to light their way back.
Bon Festival week in mid August is one of Japan's three major holiday seasons. Many people will go out of town and visit relatives for this event.
