National Shrimp Day focuses on eating shrimp, but it is also an opportunity to consider the environmental impact of pollution, including oil spills, on the habitat of shrimp and the effect it has on the lives of those whom make their living shrimping.
Since the Deep Water Horizon oil spill in 2010 the Gulf Coast States producing American Shrimp have been struggling. Increased competition from South America and Asia as well as the destruction of the natural habitat has placed many shrimpers in dire financial situations. The habitat and the industry are slowly returning to normal due to the efforts of many in several states.
