World Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking. declared by the United Nations through General Assembly Resolution 42/112.
This awareness campaign highlights the fight against drug abuse and the illegal drug trade and stronger courses of action toward creating a drug abuse-free international society.
June 26 was chosen as the date to commemorate the anniversary of Lin Zexu breaking of the Guangdong opium trade prior to the First Opium Wars in China in 1839. With his workers it took 23 days to dump more than 1 million kilograms of opium into the ocean.
