National Sewing Machine Day celebrates Isaac Merritt Singer's patent number 8294, granted August 12, 1851. This innovation in sewing technology created the first sewing machine that could be used in homes.
Singer's wasn't the first patent. Thomas Saint earned that in 1790 for the sewing machine designed to work with leather. In 1840 William Newton Wilson discovered the drawings of Saint's in the London Patent Office, and he improved the design and created his own version. After two years, John Greenough applied for a patent in the United States, but the patent was awarded to Elias Howe, who used a lockstitch design.
At this point, Singer already had industrial sewing machines, which he sold on an installment plan to manufacturers. In 1851, he created a smaller, affordable device for in-home use that revolutionized the garment industry. The rest is history.
