On October 31, 2011, the global population hit seven billion people, a 40% increase in just 23 years. This unprecedented increase in humankind has forced an urgent focus on issues of poverty, diseases, climate change, and the overall political climate.
How has the population grown?
In 33AD, the year Jesus Christ was crucified, the worldwide population was estimated at 150 million to 330 million, on the high end, roughly the population of the United States. It would take 1,600 years for that number to double to 603 million.
Near 1820 is when the world hit 1 billion people, two-thirds of the population of China or India today.
Over the next 110 years, the world's population nearly tripled, hitting 2.7 billion in 1930.
It would take barely 57 years to double to 5 billion in 1987.
In November 2022, it will hit 8 billion and, by 2060, 10 billion.
