DESCRIPTION:
Dick Clark created the American Music Awards in 1973 as an event that could replace the Grammy Awards when the latter's contract expired.
The American Music Awards rely on the public's vote rather than professional trade members.
By airing in the fall rather than during the first quarter, the American Music Awards have enjoyed immense success, partly because it does not compete with other major award shows.
