International 24 Karat Day marks the anniversary of the discovery of gold on January 24, 1848, by James W Marshal at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California.
Dubbed the California Gold Rush in 1849, this single event was responsible for massive migration in the United States across the country to the Western States. Those chasing gold in California were affectionately referred to as Forty-niners.
