It begins in your 40s. You’re reading the messages on your cell phone and notice it has become difficult to read. You find yourself reaching for reading glasses. In a short period, usually weeks, you can no longer read your text messages without glasses.
Next, you begin to notice it’s not as much fun to drive at night, and it’s hard to read labels in the supermarket. The fine print is no print, and your carefree days of living without glasses are suddenly gone.
Most everyone experiences this. But some get much worse.
AMD (Age-related macular degeneration) is a leading cause of vision loss. It affects more than 2 million Americans aged 50 and older.
AMD Low Vision Month is set aside each year in February to bring awareness to the effects and dangers associated with vision loss as we age. Programs focus on promoting aids for low vision that enable people to make the most of their remaining vision. Optometrists and others supply information on eye diseases, warning signs, and treatment.
