June 6, 1944 was the first day of the massive invasion of Normandy, France by Allied forces. At the time, the Axis powers, led by Nazi Germany, held most of Europe under their power. This invasion created a two front war for Germany and is the first major invasion, which turned the fortunes of the war and began the march to the end of the Third Reich.
