The month of Av (Hebrew for father) or Menachem Av is the 11th month of the Hebrew calendar. It is the month of contradictions, love and dispair. Love due to the 15th of Av occurs, an event often referred to as the 'Jewish Valentine's Day'.
Dispair, because during this month, both temples in Jerusalem were destroyed, in 586 BC and 70 AD. Av Rosh Chodesh on the first day of Av begins a 9 day mourning period for the destroyed temples. The second temple's destruction ended temple-based Hebrew faith. In the centuries to come, Rabbinic Talmudism replaced the temple faith with what is today known as modern Judiasm.
PLEASE NOTE:
All Hebrew calendar months begin and end at sundown. LEEP Calendar marks Jewish months starting on their first full day. Observant people of the faith will observe the beginning of the month at sunset the day prior.
