The Secret Society of Happy People champions August's Happiness Happens Month in the United States.
The month began after the Society declared August 8 as Happiness Happens Day in 1999, and members requested to expand the celebrations to the month.
"The purpose of the celebration is to encourage people to talk more about happiness and simply celebrate being happy," says Society Founder Pamela Gail Johnson. "Celebrating happiness doesn't mean you're never unhappy," says Pamela. "Life is a mixture of good and bad events and moments.
Unfortunately, our culture glamorizes unhappiness more than it celebrates happiness."
The Society sets one day aside to focus on activities, August 8.
Promotions include social media, where Happy-a-Thon Ambassadors volunteer to send five happy social media messages that day. When they volunteer, they'll get a guide through ideas, sharing what makes them glad to encourage conversations.
