National Ice Cream Sandwich Day celebrates the portable ice cream and cookie treat that originated with ice cream between two graham crackers in 1894 New York City. It sold for a penny from street vendors.
The form we are familiar with today, a vanilla slab between two chocolate biscuits, was invented by Jerry Newberg from Pittsburgh in 1945.
