DESCRIPTION:
Ahoi Ashtami traditionally occurs mid-fall in October or November, a mother-son observance in the Hindu faith.
Mothers of sons awaken before dawn, place pristine water into a mud container called a kora karawa, and pray to the goddess Ahoi. The women then fast (vrat) for the entire day. Mothers believe fasting coupled with prayers endows their male children with good luck. At nightfall, the mother’s fast is broken with fruit. She continues to pray, offering pure water from the kora karawa to the stars in the sky and offering sweets to a wall painted with the image of the goddess.
