November 5 in the United Kingdom is known as Civil Disobedience Day (Guy Fawkes Night, Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night, or Firework Night).
On this day in 1605, a group of English Catholics, led by Guy Fawkes, attempted to assassinate the Protestant King James I of England and replace him with a Catholic monarch.
After the failed attempt, Fawkes was caught guarding a cache of explosives placed beneath the House of Lords in London, and he was attempting to blow up the entire building.
Every year since, November 5 is remembered and marked as a symbol of civil disobedience. The 'Guy Fawkes Mask' is one of the more endearing symbols of rebellion, and the most recent sighting was in the 2006 film "V for Vendetta."
