National Moth-er Day celebrates moths and those who protect, study, and care for them. There are over 11,000 species of moths in the world, each unique. Moths and their caterpillar form are food for many animals, and they are also essential in pollination, nectar collection, and seed distribution. The Malay archipelago hosts the largest moth in the world, which can be up to 60 square inches (152 square centimeters) in size with a wing span of over a foot (30 centimeters). Moths can be extremely colorful, like butterflies.
The main difference between a moth and a butterfly is its antennas. In a moth, these are fat and look like feathers or small saws. Butterfly antennas are smooth and thin. Butterflies also tend to fold their wings above them when at rest. A moth will rest with its wings open and on full display.
