Father Damien Day recognizes Father Damien, born Jozef De Veuster in Belgium on January 3, 1840. He was a Roman Catholic priest who spent much of his life living and working on the Hawaiian island of Moloka'i. He dedicated his days to helping those who lived with leprosy and were ostracized by the larger society. The government forced them to live in quarantine.
After providing much-needed spiritual, emotional, and physical support for the needy and sick, Father Damien died of leprosy in 1889.
The Roman Catholic Church made him a saint for his lifelong dedication to humanity and all his work.
