National Adult Day Services Week is an awareness campaign designed to educate the country on the services and advantages of adult day centers.
Adult day centers serve the elderly by hosting social events, transitional care, and short-term rehabilitation following hospital discharge. Adult day centers are an interactive, safe and secure environment for participants requiring supervised daily care as a preferred platform for chronic disease management.
While nearly half of all participants nationally have some level of dementia, other common chronic diseases include chronic hypertension, physical disability, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, mental illness, and developmental disability. Adult day services provide a reliable source of support, restore balance in times of crisis, and enhance caregivers' overall quality of life.
Former President Ronald Reagan proclaimed National Adult Day Services Week on September 27, 1983; it occurs during the third complete week of September each year.
