DESCRIPTION:
On October 18, 1929, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in England ruled in the women's favor on whether women are "persons" according to the law. As persons, women would have the right to vote and the same legal standing as men. The court ruled that women are indeed people.
The fight is far from over for humans with XX chromosomes.
For example, the Equal Rights Amendment guaranteeing women equal rights with men has never been passed in the United States, despite over 50 years of trying.
Throughout the world, women face varying incursions to their rights and personhood, some imposed by religion, some by states and laws, and some through good old-fashioned misogyny. Currently, due to emerging social movements, even defining what a woman is has become contentious.
