Today, the Pulitzer Prize winners will be announced for works done in the previous year.
The Pulitzer Prize began in 1917, highlighting achievements in the United States newspapers, magazines, online journalism, literature, and musical composition. It's named after Hungarian-born American Joseph Pulitzer, who died in 1911. He was a prominent newspaper publisher who endowed Columbia University with US$two million to develop a School of Journalism in 1912.
In 1917 the school began awarding prizes for outstanding journalism named for its benefactor. Today it is considered the most prestigious award in journalism, letters (books), drama, music, and special awards and citations categories.
