World Night in Defense of Starlight, also called "World Night in Defense of the Night Sky and the Right to Observe the Stars as a cultural, scientific and environmental humankind heritage," exists to help people of the city see actual starlight at least once a year.
Once the sun sets, people switch off unnecessary lights to save energy, organize artistic events and competitions related to astronomy, get a telescope and see the beauty of the night sky, advocate for local dark sky ordinances, and bask in the full beauty of the night sky once again.
