Children's Day observations in the United States predate Mother's and Father's Day, and the first such was acknowledged prior to the 1860s.
Since 2007, the governor of Illinois has proclaimed "Children's Day" on the second Sunday in June. Also, such cities as Aurora, Il.; Batavia, Il.; Fort Collins, Co.; Vancouver, WA.; and other American cities have issued proclamations.
Numerous churches and denominations currently observe the second Sunday in June, including the African Methodist Episcopal Church, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, and the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
The significance of the 2nd Sunday in June is its proximity to Father's Day, which occurs on the 3rd Sunday in June. There is a grassroots attempt to make National Children's Day part of the official US observance calendar.
June 1 is International Children's Day, and November 20 is Universal Children's Day.
