Paul Bunyan Day honors the character of literary legend. Paul Bunyan is the giant lumberjack in American folklore. He and his companion, Babe the Blue Ox, are characters in numerous songs and stories popularized by just as many authors. The first known printed story about Bunyan, "Caught on the Run," ran in the Duluth News Tribune on August 4, 1904. Its author is unknown.
One of the more notable authors is James MacGillivray, who wrote about Paul Bunyan in "Round River" in the July 24, 1910 edition of the Detroit News. Round River was an expanded version of his first story on Bunyan, which appeared on August 10, 1906, Oscoda Press. Today marks the anniversary of that story.
