Cervical Cancer Awareness Month seeks to raise awareness about this highly treatable disease. Multiple screening tests for cervical cancer and vaccines are available that target the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer. However, most women who have cervical cancer fail to be screened. The pap smear is a standard part of the recommended annual women's exam and is used to detect it.
