On March 9, 1959, the Barbie Doll, one of the most successful toys of all time, premiered at the American International Toy Fair. The doll is named after creator Ruth Handler’s daughter Barbara. Later the doll was given a full name, Barbara Millicent Roberts, daughter of the fictional George and Margaret Roberts and living in the fictional town of Willows, Wisconsin.
The Barbie doll was one of the first toys to benefit from a complete marketing campaign. Later Barbie got a boyfriend named Ken Carson in 1961 and a sister called Skipper. She became a figurehead of Feminism in the 1970s, taking on multiple careers.
The Barbie Doll idea came from the 1955 German doll Bild Lilli.
