Vesak or Wesak is commonly referred to as Buddha Day and is acknowledged by the United Nations on the full moon in May (Vaisakha, a month of the Buddhist calendar that Hindus share). It is the day the Buddhist faith marks the dawning of the age of enlightenment known as Nirv_na. The exact date varies depending on the country and traditions; the most common date is this.
Buddhists mark this day with meditation, observing the eight precepts, partaking in vegetarianism, giving to charity, and bathing Buddha statues. Traditionally, Buddhists set this day aside to bring happiness to the unfortunate, including the elderly, handicapped, and sick. They do so by distributing gifts or cash to various charitable homes nationwide.
Vesak became an official Buddhist holiday in 1950; it parallels in importance the Christian celebration of Christmas and the Muslim celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
