Agricultural expansion accounts for 90% of global deforestation. That is just one of the issues the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030, championed by the United Nations, seeks to address. The decade seeks to scale up the restoration of degraded and destroyed ecosystems in order to fight the climate crisis and enhance food security, water supply, and biodiversity.
José Graziano da Silva, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), states, "Ecosystems are being degraded at an unprecedented rate. Our global food systems and the livelihoods of many millions of people depend on all of us working together to restore healthy and sustainable ecosystems for today and the future."
Ecosystem restoration is defined as the process of reversing degradation within ecosystems, including landscapes, lakes, and oceans. This includes regaining their ecological functionality and improving ecosystems' productivity and capacity to meet society's needs.
