All communities have issues with rainwater runoff during heavy storms, but desert communities specifically, struggle with this. It does rain in deserts, and when it rains it often pours! This can quickly saturate the land and result in clogged sewers in town, and flash flooding in canyons outside of town. Stormwater Awareness Week seeks to educate the public about the dangers associated with stormwater, including flooding, but also help prevent bad things from ending up in the water like pesticides, trash, oil and other pollutant. Stormwater often runs off into the ocean, river or lakes. Flash floods can catch hikers and outdoor enthusiasts buy surprise, injuring or killing them in their wake.
Stormwater Awareness Week is a Southwestern US regional awareness event.
