The idea for vacuum cleaners first came about in 1599, but the first modern mechanized vacuum cleaner wasn't patented until October 3, 1899.
A hand driven machine (you'll see it in the television show Upstairs/Downstairs), was patented on June 8, 1869.
There is a historical reference to vacuums and February 4. It was on this day in 1862 that Herbert W. C. Tweddle patented a system for distilling petroleum and similar substances via the use of a vacuum created through steam. This invention helped pave the way for gasoline and many of the hydro-carbon oils we use today.
Create a Vacuum Day may have been chosen to honor Tweddle's patent. Regardless, this science holiday is a chance to look at all the modern conveniences we have today that require vacuums, from floor sweepers to gasoline.
