ALL HANDS ON DECK FOR GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE MONTH
Global Youth Service Month straddles April and May. The global initiative celebrates and mobilizes young people to engage in community service and social action. It serves as an extension of Global Youth Service Day, the world's largest youth service and civic action event, which takes place annually on the third weekend of April.
HISTORY AND OBJECTIVE
Global Youth Service Day was established in 1988 by Youth Service America (YSA), an organization dedicated to increasing the number and diversity of young people engaged in volunteer service. Recognizing young volunteers' growing impact and enthusiasm, YSA expanded the event to a month-long celebration in 2000, creating Global Youth Service Month. This extension provides more opportunities for young people to participate and for communities to recognize their contributions.
The primary objective of Global Youth Service Month is to highlight and support the power of young people to create positive change in their communities and the world. It aims to promote youth engagement, foster a sense of civic responsibility, and inspire a lifelong commitment to service. In doing so, it seeks to address critical issues such as poverty, education, health, and the environment while empowering the next generation of leaders.
Global Youth Service Month involves diverse participants, including young people, schools, community organizations, nonprofits, and businesses. Participation spans over 100 countries, engaging millions of young volunteers in various service projects and activities.
Young people participate in Global Youth Service Month by organizing and taking part in community service projects. These can range from local clean-up efforts, food drives, and educational workshops to larger-scale initiatives addressing global challenges. A significant part of this coordination is done by schools and youth organizations, which provide resources and support to facilitate youth-led action. Additionally, social media campaigns using hashtags like #GYSD and #YouthServiceMonth help to spread awareness, share stories of impact, and connect volunteers across the globe.
Many organizations and businesses support Global Youth Service Month by offering grants, resources, and volunteer opportunities to young people. They also recognize and celebrate the achievements of young volunteers through awards and public acknowledgments, further encouraging a culture of service.
Global Youth Service Month is a significant event that empowers young people to make a difference in their communities and beyond. Fostering youth engagement in service and civic action promotes positive change, civic responsibility, and leadership development. This month-long celebration highlights young volunteers' contributions and inspires and supports their continued commitment to creating a better world.
