Patent Day commemorates the passing of the Patent Act of 1790. The US Patent System allows the inventor to protect and profit from a unique product or idea.
The Patent Act of 1790 was the first act passed by the United States Federal Government on April 10, 1790, a year after the constitutional ratification. A patent is ‘any useful art, manufacture, engine, machine, device, or any improvement thereon not before known or used.’
Obtaining a patent grants the applicant the ‘sole and exclusive right and liberty of making, constructing, using and vending to others to be used’ of his invention for a specific period.
