IT'S YOUR MONEY, HERE'S HOW TO HANDLE IT.
Junior Achievement Worldwide's My Money Week in the United Kingdom is an annual initiative to improve young people's financial literacy. Launched in 2009 by the charity Young Enterprise, part of the global Junior Achievement network, the event has become a key fixture in the UK's educational calendar.
HISTORY
My Money Week was created to address the need for better school financial education. Since its inception, the initiative has evolved significantly, with resources and activities continually updated to reflect changes in the financial landscape and students' needs. Initially, the event focused on a single week of activities. Still, due to its success and the ongoing demand for financial education, many schools extend their participation over longer periods.
The event targets students aged 5 to 19 and involves many participants, including schools, teachers, parents, and financial professionals. The objective is to equip young people with essential money management skills, fostering a better-prepared generation to make informed financial decisions. During My Money Week, students engage in various activities such as budgeting exercises, discussions about saving and spending, and interactive games that teach the value of money in a practical, engaging way.
GETTING INVOLVED
Schools and educators can participate by registering through the Young Enterprise website, where they can access free teaching resources, including lesson plans, activity sheets, and interactive tools. These resources are tailored to different age groups and are designed to be flexible, allowing teachers to incorporate them into their curricula. Financial professionals and volunteers are also encouraged to get involved by offering their expertise through classroom visits, workshops, or virtual sessions, helping to bring real-world financial experiences into the educational setting.
Overall, My Money Week is a vital platform for promoting financial literacy among young people in the UK, helping lay the groundwork for a financially savvy future generation.
