The day is a hat tip to illustrator Jogn Tenniel's interpretation of the Mad Hatter in Louis Carrol's "Alice through the Looking Glass." In his illustrations, the Mad Hatter wears a hat with a slip of paper that says, "In this style 10/6".
In the United Kingdom, Mad Hatter Day is celebrated on June 10, as Europeans read dates with the day first and the month second.
