Referred to as three-eleven in Japan, today is the anniversary of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Meltdown, March 11, 2011.
The nuclear disaster occurred when the plant was hit by a tsunami triggered by one of the world’s most deadly earthquakes, a magnitude of 9.0. Radioactive material began releasing the next day. The cleanup continues. Some contaminated water made it to the sea, infecting fish and plant life. More than 300,000 people evacuated the area due to the tsunami and earthquake.
The nuclear disaster was ruled manmade as the plant was unable to weather such a disaster.
The first three of their six reactors melted down in March 2011, damaging the fourth reactor. Decommissioning could take more than 40 years. Nuclear refugees total over 71,000, most remaining in temporary housing.
