World Week in Solidarity Against Racial Discrimination is created and promoted by the United Nations (UN) to raise awareness against racism and help those of us that are struggling against it. The week was established in 1979 upon adoption of a program of activities designed to combat racism throughout the world. A day focusing on peoples struggle against racism was already in force since 1966 on March 21.
The week marks the anniversary of the March 21, 1960 Sharpeville Massacre in South Africa, in which South African police opened fire on the peaceful protesters, killing sixty-nine.
