DESCRIPTION:
Emancipation Day marks the anniversary in 1862 when President Abraham Lincoln signed an executive order freeing the 3,100 slaves living in Washington, DC, one of the first steps in ending legal slavery.
The Emancipation Proclamation Act of January 1, 1863, is the final document that ended the legal practice of slavery in the US. However, it would continue in the Southern States until the end of the Civil War on May 9, 1865, and until the final group of slaves in Texas learned they were free on June 19, forty days later.
