On this day in 79AD that Italy's Mount Vesuvius erupted, violently destroying the city of Pompeii and several surrounding towns. The mountain remained active for the next 1500 years, erupting periodically.
Vesuvius is perhaps the most famous volcanic eruption in history. It happened so quickly that residents in the city of Pompeii were encased in ash and the outline of their bodies remained intact. They were discovered in 1748 by a surveying engineer and have provided a unique look into life during Roman times.
