Cats have been companions to people for over ten to 12,000 years and perform an essential function in keeping rodent populations at bay. Cats, as we know them today, are descendants of a Middle Eastern wildcat called "Felis Sylvestris," or Cat of the Woods. This origin is why cats are called felines and where the name Sylvester (as in Sylvester the Cat) is widespread.
