Today marks the birthdate of one of America's first black leaders.
Frederick Douglass was born on February 14, 1818, as a slave in Tuckahoe, Maryland. He rose to greatness in his life as an advocate for the abolitionist movement. Douglass later became the first African American to hold a high office in the US Government. He died on February 20, 1895.
