Like many eastern European and Baltic states, Estonia has endured a less than direct path to independence. On February 24, 1918, it achieved its independence from the Russian empire, only to be annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940. Fifty-one years later, this little nation, populated since 8500 BC, finally achieved independence again. Today is their national day celebrating the anniversary of their first freedom.
