February 12, 1809, is the birthday of American President Abraham Lincoln.
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. As President, he built the Republican Party into a strong national organization and rallied most northern Democrats to the Union cause. On January 1, 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation that declared forever free of those enslaved within the Confederacy. He was assassinated on April 15, 1865.
Lincoln’s birthday is also known as Lost Penny Day because Lincoln’s profile appears on the penny, and his image also graces the American five-dollar bill.
