The third Monday of July is a true man's day, "National Get Out of the Doghouse Day." Its purpose is to encourage men to get their act together and do the right thing to put them back into their wives' good graces.
Being in the "dog house" is an American colloquialism men often use to describe a situation where they know they've done something they shouldn't have. Their partner, usually a wife or girlfriend, has banished the offending male from the house as punishment, leaving him just the doghouse for sleep.
Banishment typically includes not speaking to the offending male, passive-aggressive behavior, withholding affection, angry outbursts, and generally uncomfortable home life for anywhere from an hour to weeks. This event first ran in 1999. It was created by Social Media marketing expert Heidi Richards Mooney.
