The rose is the official flower of June via tradition, and thus June is known as National Rose Month.
With over 150 species, roses have existed for 35 million years, according to fossils, and are native to the northern hemisphere. It is believed this fragrant flower was first cultivated in China approximately 5,000 years ago.
Throughout this month, florists are encouraged to present different varieties of roses.
In 1986 the rose was declared the official flower and made part of the United States National Emblem by President Ronald Reagan.
