Kindergarten Day in the United States and Germany commemorates the birthday of the Friedrich Froebe (April 21, 1782 - June 21, 1852), the founder of the first kindergarten.
Froebe first conceived the idea of a kindergarten in Blankenburg, Germany in 1837. A teacher, he believed in education is better when done through play and experience, easing the transition of learning from home to formal school. He founded the first kindergarten that year in Germany.
Despite being popular internationally, the Prussian government banned kindergarten until 1851.
The first kindergarten in the United States was put up in St. Louis in 1873.
