The Sister Cities International promotes Sister Cities Day to honor the mission of bringing cities, states, and entire countries together by various diplomatic, educational, cultural, and other means.
Created at the 1956 White House summit on citizen diplomacy under President Eisenhower, this network champions peace and prosperity between all the world's nations.
