Theodor Herzl Day is a day of commemoration in Israel that honors the life and legacy of Theodor Herzl, who is widely regarded as the father of modern political Zionism. The holiday is observed annually on the tenth of Iyar, the Hebrew date of Herzl's death, which usually falls in May.
Theodor Herzl was an Austro-Hungarian journalist and playwright who became a passionate advocate for the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine. He first became involved in the Zionist movement in the late 19th century, and he later played a key role in organizing the First Zionist Congress, which was held in Basel, Switzerland, in 1897. Herzl's vision for a Jewish state in Palestine was based on the idea of political Zionism, which called for the creation of a Jewish homeland through political means, rather than through religious or cultural ties.
Herzl's efforts to promote the Zionist cause helped to galvanize the Jewish community around the world, and his work laid the foundation for the eventual establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. Herzl died in 1904 at the age of 44, and he is buried in Jerusalem.
Theodor Herzl Day was established as a national holiday in Israel in 2007, in recognition of Herzl's pivotal role in the establishment of the State of Israel. On this day, various events and activities are held throughout Israel to commemorate Herzl's legacy and to promote the ideals of Zionism. Many schools and educational institutions hold programs and events that focus on Herzl's life and work, and his contributions to the Zionist movement.
