The National Premmie Foundation in Australia, the March of Dimes, and other nation-specific organizations and NGOs promote and sponsor World Prematurity Day each year, seeking to raise awareness about the dangers of preterm birth.
Preterm or premature birth is the world's number one killer of babies and young children, accounting for nearly a million deaths yearly.
Even if the child survives, being born prematurely can result in lifelong health issues, including cerebral palsy, vision and hearing loss, and mental impairment.
