DESCRIPTION:
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was first designated in 1993 by the UN General Assembly. Its purpose is to promote awareness of the cost of poverty to society, the environment, and national economies while seeking solutions to end it. The day marks the Anniversary of Father Joseph Wresinski's Call to Action on poverty on October 17, 1987.
