DESCRIPTION:
On October 20, 1952, Kenya's first president (as yet a revolutionary), Jomo Kenyatta, and five colleagues were arrested by British colonial forces. That event is the origin of this holiday, initially called Kenyatta Day. In 2010 the holiday's scope embraced all heroes and trailblazers of Kenya's history and was renamed Mashujaa Day, Swahili for "heroes."
